Grade 12 Chemistry is entering the final lap of the syllabus as we work towards the final examinations in May next year. With just two units remaining for SL (Acids and Bases, and Redox Processes) and four for HL (including HL Kinetics, Equilibrium, Acids and Bases, and Redox Processes), we are steadily moving towards completing the course and transitioning into focused revision and exam preparation. This week, students wrapped up Energetics and Kinetics with an end-of-unit assessment, providing an opportunity to consolidate their understanding and identify areas that require further attention. It is encouraging to see some students already collecting raw data for their proposed Internal Assessment (IA) research questions, marking an important step in bringing their independent investigations to life.
The Chemistry IA is a significant component of the DP course, contributing 20% of the final Chemistry grade, and students are encouraged to make the most of the allocated time and feedback opportunities. With approximately 10 hours allocated to the IA, effective planning, consistent effort and careful use of feedback are essential. The first major step is settling on a focused, feasible research question that can be investigated reliably with the available equipment and resources. From there, students need to collect sufficient quality data, process and analyse their results, evaluate their methods and draw evidence-based conclusions. Feedback expected in late November will be particularly valuable in guiding improvements, so students should approach this milestone with preparation and purpose. As we balance syllabus completion with independent research, the coming weeks will be crucial in building both the subject knowledge and scientific skills needed for success in the final examinations.
