Our Grade 11 IBDP biologists have wrapped up their foundational units on carbohydrates and lipids, establishing a rigorous grounding in biochemistry. Throughout these topics, students analyzed molecular architecture, comparing simple sugars to complex polysaccharides and examining how lipid structures drive cellular energy storage, thermal insulation, and membrane fluidity across diverse organisms. Next week, our budding scientists will transition from theory to hands-on investigation in the laboratory. Through qualitative biochemical assays, they will test various food samples to identify the presence or absence of these vital organic molecules, reinforcing critical analytical techniques and experimental design. To complete their exploration of life’s major macromolecules, the cohort will also commence their final biochemistry unit: proteins. From amino acid condensation and structural folding to catalytic enzyme kinetics, students will uncover the mechanisms making proteins life’s most versatile tools.
