As part of our exploration ofย Classroom Community, KG1 learners have been building a ongoing inquiry chart: “What Questions Can We Ask Our New Teachers and New Friends?”

Today, we progressed to questions #9 and #10:

  • Question #9: “Do you have a pet?”

  • Question #10: “What pet do you have?”

๐Ÿ“ˆ Hands-On Data Collection & Analysis

Using these two new questions, the students created a real-time Classroom Pet Chart to collect, count, and analyze data across our group:

  • Cats & Rabbits: We recorded 3 students with cats and 3 with rabbits. Some learners highlighted that they have multiple pets (up to 2) at home.

  • Exploring the Concept of Zero (0): Students identified and counted 0 for snakes, mice, and birds.

  • Classroom Diversity: We discussed that many of our peers do not have pets, helping children recognize that every family dynamic is unique.

๐Ÿง  IB PYP Connections

  • Central Idea:ย Play is the way we learn about ourselves and others.

  • Line of Inquiry: Becoming part of a class community.

  • Learner Profile Attributes:

    • Communicators: Formulating structured questions to learn more about peers and teachers.

    • Inquirers & Reflective: Analyzing collection data, understanding the concept of zero, and comparing quantities (more, less, equal).

  • Approaches to Learning (ATLs):

    • Thinking Skills: Organizing data, counting, and subitizing quantities.

    • Social Skills: Active listening and building shared awareness within our class community.

๐Ÿ” Next Steps

Because several classmates were absent due to illness, our data for questions #9 and #10 is not yet complete. The children practiced phrasing their inquiry questions today and are prepared to interview their returning peers to finalize our chart.
