We are steadily moving along the scientific inquiry. Our students began by observing how different paper planes performed and used their observations to develop a scientific question that could be investigated. They then formulated a hypothesis, predicting what they thought would happen and explaining their reasoning.
Working collaboratively, students designed and constructed their own paper planes and planned the steps they would follow to carry out a fair investigation. They learned to identify their: Independent variable, Dependent variable and Controlled variables. Students then tested their planes and recorded their results. The investigation provided a valuable opportunity for students to develop not only their practical skills, but also their ability to ask questions, make predictions, plan investigations, work collaboratively and collect scientific evidence.
It was wonderful to see students taking increasing ownership of their investigations and beginning to think and work more like scientists
