One of the best ways to support your child’s language development is simply to talk with them often. Children build vocabulary, strengthen sentence structure, and improve communication skills through everyday conversations, not just through reading.
Talk with your child about their school day, what they notice on a walk or drive, their hobbies and interests, a movie you watched together, or events happening in the world around them. Everyday moments can become meaningful learning opportunities.
When possible, ask open-ended questions that encourage more than a one-word answer. A simple strategy many families enjoy is the “Rose, Thorn, and Bud” conversation:
- Rose: Share something good that happened during the day.
- Thorn: Talk about something challenging or difficult.
- Bud: Share something they are looking forward to.
These kinds of conversations help children develop confidence, language skills, and stronger connections with family members.
