Grade 7 art students explored the Key Concept of Identity by analyzing a famous portrait of their choice and reinterpreting it through their own artistic self-portrait. To begin, they took five photographs that reflected their unique identity while incorporating themes, techniques, or concepts from the studied artwork. After reviewing their images, they selected the strongest one as their final piece. Students then titled their work, specified the medium used (e.g., digital photography, mixed media), and credited the artist and artwork that inspired them. Finally, they wrote a reflection explaining how their selfie connects to the studied portrait, the message or emotion they aim to convey, and any adjustments or enhancements made to their final image. This process fosters creativity, critical thinking, and a deeper understanding of portraiture in art.
