Grade 8 students in their MYP Design class are engaged in an exciting interdisciplinary unit (IDU) that integrates MYP Design, Science, and Math. This collaborative project challenges students to apply their knowledge of scaling to create small models of selected national parks. Students are working in groups of 2–3, fostering collaboration and teamwork.

The journey began with Criterion A, where students identified the need for their product and defined their target audience. Through brainstorming and research, they explored the purpose and importance of accurately scaled models and their role in understanding and appreciating natural environments.

Next, students moved on to creating sketches, applying scaling techniques learned in Math classes to ensure accuracy and proportionality. These sketches served as blueprints, guiding the construction process of their models.

Currently, the project is in its most hands-on phase. Students are sharing ideas and, guided by a logical plan with sequenced steps, carefully crafting their models. They are paying close attention to details that highlight the unique features of their selected parks.

The collaborative spirit and interdisciplinary nature of this project have sparked enthusiasm among both students and teachers. We can’t wait to see how these models evolve into final products that showcase creativity, craftsmanship, and the practical application of academic knowledge.
