Grade 8 students have begun an exciting new unit in MYP Visual Arts, exploring the art of printmaking with a focus on the theme of nature. This unit introduces them to the creative and technical process of relief printmaking, where designs are carved into a raised surface, such as linoleum. Ink is applied to the raised areas, while the carved sections remain blank, creating bold and dynamic contrasts in the final prints.

To kickstart their artistic journey, students explored the school campus, capturing photographs of nature, architecture, and human activity. These images served as inspiration for their initial thumbnail sketches, helping them explore a range of compositions. After evaluating their ideas, they developed detailed final sketches, which will act as guides for carving their linoleum blocks.

As they move into the next phase, students are excited to bring their designs to life through the printmaking process. This hands-on experience not only sharpens their artistic and technical skills but also encourages them to challenge themselves, demonstrating the IB learner profile attribute of being risk-takers.
