Imagine you could create the perfect city – what would it look like? This was the simple yet thought-provoking question we asked our Grade 10 MYP Art students as they began their unit. With a focus on the aesthetic influence of our local environment on the community, students started to develop their visions of an ideal city for their final exhibition artwork.

The artistic process began with students sketching their ideas through thumbnail drawings, incorporating tonal values, experimenting with watercolor techniques, and using collage to explore various textures and styles. Students also went outside the classroom, their task was to take 20 photographs of our school environment. The goal was to capture the essence of thinkers and risk-takers through these photos- engaging the MYP learner profile into their art. Developing self-management skills were crucial in our approaches to learning, as students balanced the many tasks involved in developing their final pieces.

Throughout the unit, students were actively engaged in research and critical reflection, constantly refining their understanding of art’s potential to shape society.
