This week we have been rehearsing a Reader’s Theatre performance. Reader’s Theatre develops reading fluency, accuracy and expression. Our reading strategy of using phrasing (being aware of punctuation) and expression has really supported our rehearsals. Students formed small groups between 2 and 4 students, then chose their own scripts. After a few rehearsals, groups decided if they wanted to wear costumes and use props for their final performance. The students did a fabulous job reading their scripts and using their voices for each character. We will continue with this activity throughout our current unit of inquiry.

Students’ personal narratives are coming along. They have chosen an event related to a day at the beach, generated a problem and solution and added how they felt. Once their plan was complete they began their first draft in which they are using paragraphs to organise their writing and learning techniques for writing their narrative, such as: hooking a reader, adding details and showing their story, rather than telling it. It’s a challenging writing process and the students are working really hard to express themselves through their own personal story.

In maths, we have continued working on adding within 100. The strategies we are working on are: bridging to 10, counting on and using expanded notation. You will see some of this work on Seesaw. The students are continuing to build their skills in mentally solving word problems.
