The exploration of biomolecules by grade 11 students culminated in the testing of these molecules in different food substances. Students learned how to use different tests to determine the presence of proteins, lipids, starch, and reducing sugars in different food samples. The tests included the biuret test for proteins, the Iodine test for starch, Benedict’s test for reducing sugars, and the alcohol emulsion test for lipids. One of the main purposes of this is to enhance the student’s explorative skills in their study of the subject. Biology is an experimental science and when the opportunity presents itself, we seek to maximize it to reinforce theories studied in class through experimentation.
