In a PBL (Project Based Learning), the Grade 9 practiced their fledgling composition skills through the lens of Advocacy Music. Each student selected a Sustainable Development Goal to use as stimuli for their compositions. As a class, we focused on how to use timbre, texture, instrument selection, and harmonic layering to create engaging and and provoking pieces. The students then crafted original compositions centered around their SDGs, where they had to consider how to connect music to a concrete and complex idea. The final product was an advocacy video that synced not only with their SDG but the composition as well. The results were incredible and the quality of the craftsmanship was inspired and powerful. Please enjoy these projects by the Grade 9s!
