In grade 2 this week we have been diving deeper into our new unit of inquiry: Sharing the planet and our central idea – Habitats rely on certain factors to survive. We have begun developing our research skills by completing a search through non-fiction books to locate information about a variety of sharks. We are becoming more aware of the interdependence of living organisms and how they work together within a habitat. There is a collection of books in the Sharing the planet folder to read on Epic which students should be able to access on Friday and afterschool from Monday to Thursday. They can continue their learning at home by exploring these non-fiction books.

For maths this week, we have been practising our skip counting which is a necessary foundation for learning multiplication facts. We have practised 10 more than a number, this can be practised at home up to 100. You can provide a number for your child and ask them to tell you 10 more, 10 less, 1 more or 1 less. We are learning the vocabulary for length measurement and the tools we can use for measuring length. Initially, we are using a variety of non-standard measurements to estimate the length of objects, then finding the actual measurements using these units. Once we have established that we need a set of standardised units of measurements, we will begin using cm rulers, metre sticks and trundle wheels to measure different lengths.

In literacy, we have met in our small reading groups to build our reading strategies. This week we have focused on backing up and rereading to ensure we comprehend the texts we are reading. While we are doing this, we are also expanding our vocabulary by tuning into interesting works. We have had some time to continue with our short writing and thinking about what else we might like to write about. As mentioned above, we are beginning to identify non-fiction text features which support our research about animals.

Over this weekend, please share a book with your child and ask them to focus on backing up to reread and finding interesting words.

Please see below for a reading strategy we practise in class:
