With Ramadan limiting the amount of Music we can play and listen to, the Grade 9s have been focusing instead on investigating how their brains work and how they individually learn. Using the theory of Multiple Intelligences, the students first looked at the eight categories: Linguistic, Logical/Mathematical, Body Kinesthetic, Spacial, Intrapersonal, Interpersonal, Musical, and Naturalist. While some of these might appear obvious, they often contain different layers in their understanding. For example, a person who scores high on Logical/Mathematical might need to follow a recipe step-by-step to make a dish, while a person who has high Spacial scores can create the same dish without a recipe: One person needs order (beginning, middle, end) while the other needs to only understand the big picture and anticipate the different tasks needed to complete the project. Those who score high on the Musical scale aren’t always musicians, but they might have strong hearing skills and can recognize patterns quickly. B-K students need to move and manipulate things to learn- even when studying, while Naturalists are strongly influenced by their surroundings.
Once the students have a better understanding of how their brains work, they can build strategies to help them translate content and information so it makes sense in their brains. What way works for YOUR brain?
