Grade 8 students are finally getting their chance to play with mud! Now that Oman Week is over, we are back to our regular curriculum work and that means starting the studio portion of the Treasure Boxes unit. After designing their boxes and making canvas templates, today students have had an opportunity to roll out some clay slabs and begin tracing and cutting the pieces to construct their boxes in 3D.

Each student’s work space has been equipped with a slip bowl, washcloth for wiping the table, and gallon storage bag for keeping clay pieces from drying out between sessions. It takes planning to manage such a hands-on activity during a pandemic but it is important to continue offering these meaningful learning experiences wherever possible. Making tutorial videos and sharing them in Classroom is one way to make sure everyone can learn new techniques while staying safely distanced!
