Students in Grade 8 have been exploring the Surrealist art movement. This style of art is known for its unsettling, dream-like imagery. But the Surrealists weren’t crazy–Salvador Dalí, André Breton, and others simply used a variety of word games, games of chance, and other group activities to help them generate random-seeming ideas for their work.
Grade 8 has been enjoying some of these same games, while also learning about the elements of Surrealism. This knowledge will help them to create their own finished Surrealistic pieces. Options will include collage, painting, or even trying their hand at producing a surreal black-and-white film!
