From the Week of the 30th of April to the 4th of May, ABIS will be hosting two fundraising events to fight cancer through donations. The first event will be the week-long Baiza Blitz, and the second event will be a Walk-a-thon set on “May, the 4th”, just before the Primary Star Wars Movie. Both events are a combined venture of Student Council, Community Service, and the Oman Cancer Association.
The ‘Baiza Blitz’ is a competitive fundraising event between ABIS house teams. Each house will be given their own colour-coded mason jar, with which to put donations in. Students from each team are encouraged to donate more than all other teams. At the end of each day up until Thursday (May, the 4th), each house team’s jar will be counted and measured for quantity of money, and then emptied into a larger Collective Jar. The total amount of money within the Collective Jar will be donated to the Oman Cancer Association. On the 7th of May, each house team will be recognized for the size of their respective contributions to fighting Cancer.
The Walk-a-thon takes place before the Primary Star Wars Movie at 7:00pm. It is an event where participants may walk or jog around a circuit. Donations are made either as ‘Set Pledges’, where participants will donate a specific amount regardless of how many laps they will run. Alternatively, participants may donate through ‘Lap Pledges’, where an agreement is made by the participant stating that ‘for each lap around the circuit, the participant will donate a set sum of money’. All final payments through pledges will be counted and added to the Collective Jar.
The event starts with a short speech to the student/parent gathering and the OCA at the front of the ABIS Primary building in the grass area. The Rules of the Walk-a-thon will be introduced along with the Campus Circuit. All participants will then begin walking or jogging from the starting position. Students will be selling lemonade along the circuit, with all profits from sales being counted and emptied into the Collective Jar. After all the money is counted from last-minute sales, the event concludes with all money within the Collective jar is donated in entirety to the Oman Cancer Association. A short speech is given, where all participants are thanked enormously for their contributions and effort to fight cancer, and the event ends before the Primary Star Wars Movie.
