Where can four chords take us? Grades 6 and 7 spent some time making up music on the spot this week. We found a chord sequence we all enjoyed (from the song “I’m Yours”) and learnt the sequence. Along the way, we revised our knowledge of triads and accidentals. We then worked on a new mallet hold in order to play three notes (tricky with two hands!) and developed our own accompaniment patterns based on the chords. We learnt about three common chord accompaniments and how they are used to support the melody of a piece of music. After this, we worked in pairs to make up our own tunes over the old chord pattern. We had just two rules: one was the start with a pentatonic (5 note) scale and the other was that there was no practising or rehearsing. Just like our mother tongues, through which we improvise every day, sometimes our music is of the moment.
