This week the G9 Global Perspectives students had a special guest, Naymin, born and raised in Myanmar, here with us to share his experiences.
As many of you know, Myanmar is a 3rd world country that has been in the news a lot over the last few years. Myanmar is a country that is just now opening up and trying to embrace democracy after 50+ years of being closed off and under military rule. Naymin was able to share the perspective of a Burmese man who grew up in this difficult situation. He spoke about where he lived, some of the challenges he faced, and some of the challenges his country is facing today. Learning about some of the global issues they are facing, first hand from a Primary source, is extremely valuable for GP students.
Interestingly, Naymin grew up in the Rakhine State which is on the West coast of Myanmar bordering Bangladesh. As some of you know, this is an area of increasing conflict between the Burmese and the Rohingya people. Learning about conflict and conflict resolution is exactly the type of issues GP students want to learn more about. So this was an excellent introduction to a current situation that the world is watching.
We are grateful for this special visit, and want to say thank you to Naymin for taking some time to talk with us this week. Naymin is a long time friend of Mr. Davis and happens to be married to Mr. Tomlin and Ms. Giselle’s cousin! Yes, it really is a small world…
