This week G8 students looked at mathematics through the lens of history and discovered some surprising facts! We learned about people from the past like Euclid, who was alive 2,400 years ago, and developed the Euclidean Geometry system which is still in use today. We learned about Ada Lovelace (1815-1852), one of many female mathematicians who made huge strides forward in the area of mathematics. Ada Lovelace developed algorithms for the “Analytic Engine” which is recognized as an early model for the computers we use today. We also learned about a man named Pythagorus (570BC – 495BC) who was famous for discovering the Pythagorean Theorem, again, still in use today.
This exploration of mathematicians by the G8 students was both exciting and inspiring. Please visit www.famous-mathematicians.org to learn more about the founders of mathematics!
