Students in grades 7 and 8 have been playing the popular game, 2048, in an effort to collect some data to help answer some questions. In the game, players attempt to combine numbers together to make larger and larger combinations before the board fills up. Some of the lines of inquiry include…

  • how long will it take to get the 2048 tile?
  • what is the lowest score possible and still achieve the 2048 tile?
  • what is the highest score possible without achieving 2048?
  • what is the most effective strategy?
  • how many tiles are needed to achieve a score of 10,000 points?

Students will be collecting data over the weekend (playing the game and recording results). Next week, they will begin analyzing the results using various methods… Calculation, graphing, and statistics will be useful tools in the process of answering many of these questions.
