Grade 9 English students have been reading the book Spies, and this week they had a special assignment. They created tableaux, which are “freeze frames” of particular moments in the novel that are meaningful and powerful. To do the project, students identified the scenes they wanted to create, then had to create four to five motionless, silent scenes with a narrator. They really had to think carefully about characterization and relationships, rereading the text in depth. They really enjoyed creating the scenes and already have ideas about how to develop them better.
