In Grade 8 mathematics, we have completed one unit, Measurement. We had a busy time with string, tape-measures, squared paper, and containers of all sorts of sizes and shapes. It was a great way to start the year because of the practical applications of the subject and the good previous knowledge of the students. In the main assessment activity the students acted as manager of a flooring company. They each prepared a quote for the cost of flooring in Mrs Flora Flower’s new house. I was very pleased with the students’ responses to this assessment. We have also discovered together the wonders of pi by measuring the circumference and diameters of different circles around the school.
I am also pleased to note that all the students now have the scientific calculators, vital for the mathematics we do this year. Homework remains an area of improvement. The students get about 20 minutes of homework, four times a week. They are accountable for doing this homework, and need to provide me with evidence of this.
In Grade 8, the students are only just beginning to learn study and exam techniques, and this was evident in the end of topic test. This is another area I have targeted for improvement so that students’ test-marks can better reflect their knowledge and understanding. Here are some initial suggestions I have for the students. I will be posting a more comprehensive study and exam technique guide during the year.
- Keep up to date during the unit with homework and understanding.
- Be prepared. Study for the test by reading notes – but mainly by practising the skills with actual problems.
- In the test, read through the whole test first so you know the content and length.
- Use the available time to score as many points as possible.
- Always show working, especially if the question is worth more than one mark.
- Don’t use white-out correction pen, or rub out your answers if you are unsure. They may lead to vital marks.
- Always use extra time at the end checking your work.
- When you get the test back, go over the test again – write in the correct answers and ensure you understand where you went wrong. Enjoy the bits you got right.
- Don’t lose the test. It will be the main resource when you are studying for the end of year examination. Staple it to your exercise book.
