Another exciting week! We are studying about number concepts in Math and skip counting by fives. We have worked on numbers that come before and after and are starting to get into some simple addition!

In our Unit of Inquiry we are learning what it takes to be a good citizen. Here are some of the fantastic ideas the kids came up with: Daniel: let’s fly to the poor people and give them water and toys. Amara: We need to share and play with them. Sultan: We need to help people that don’t have. They are such great citizens!

During our literacy block, I am in the process of assessing each student in order to be able to meet all their needs. Please read with your child every night and help them with their letter sounds. www.starfall.com is a great resource and helps make it fun!

Spelling

This year the grade 1’s will be focusing on spelling patterns and working on tools to help them to gradually understand how words work. At this time of the year, I will not be testing students on spelling, as I find students tend to focus too much on spelling words correctly and often will not try and tackle words they do not know because they do not know how to spell them. We will eventually send home the high frequency reading words for spelling.

Homework! Oh! Homework!

Most days we will have a book to read and a page or 2 of Math. If you have questions, please contact me.

Next week we will be skip counting by 2’s and solving simple number stories. In our Unit of Inquiry we will get into the difference between needs and wants and the simple things we can do to help others access these needs. We are working on the three ways to read a book: reading the pictures, reading the words and then retelling using what you know from both.
