This week’s Advisory focus has been on Service as Action. This is an essential part of the MYP learner curriculum as shown in the following extract from the ABIS Service as Action Handbook (2025-2025): “Service as Action (SA) is an integral part of the MYP and of life at ABIS. SA starts in the classroom and extends beyond it. During your time in the MYP, you discover your place and role in communities, from your immediate family and school environment to the world at large. Throughout the MYP, you are encouraged to make connections between the things you learn at school and in your surroundings, as well as thinking about what you can give the community and the benefits the community can bring to you. Having gained awareness about the community, the next step is to take action and to become involved in Service as Action.”
The Semester 2 Grade 7 Learning Outcome is: Working collaboratively with others. This means that the focus of this Service as Action should be more on the process of collaboration, although the action should also be beneficial to the wider communities. As always, students will be expected to research into the issue that they are focused on helping and provide written reflections on their evidence, along with the sources used. They should also be adding photographic evidence throughout the semester and written reflections about working collaboratively. They have been given these prompt questions to help them:
Description of what I accomplished today/this week.
What planning did I do beforehand?
What impact did my action/s have?
How do I know?
What evidence can I provide?
Am I making progress in achieving the learning outcome?
What new awareness do I have about my strength (learner profile attribute) and the skill I targeted for growth?
Do I still feel committed to the service? Explain.
I have evidence of:
planning and organization
effort and commitment
personal development and achievements
We are already seeing some great evidence of beach cleanups, giving food to others during Ramadan, and a Musical Word Wall. Well done to these students! Unfortunately many have still to complete their summary of SA. Please ask your child to show you what they have done/are doing. Wishing you all a restful weekend. Best wishes, Team Grade 7.
