Good afternoon,
This week children in KG1 have been busy preparing thank-you cards for the six community members we have been learning about and getting to know. Each group began by deciding on a message to include inside their card. These messages were personalised to reflect the special roles each person plays at ABIS. The children then ‘signed’ their names around the message. Later in the week, they created artwork for the front of their cards. Working in pairs, the children took turns painting each other’s hands to make handprints. With the addition of green stems, these colourful handprints were turned into flowers to decorate the front of the cards. Next week, each group will personally deliver their card to the community member they have been connecting with during our unit of inquiry.
In literacy this week, we continued to explore the relationship between illustrations and stories. The children were read the text from a page in a story and were then shown a picture and asked to decide whether the illustration matched the text they had just heard. This sparked thoughtful discussions and careful observation. As a group, we then examined an interesting illustration from a (as yet new to them) storybook and talked about what we thought was happening in the picture. The children shared ideas about what the characters might be doing, saying, or thinking. To finish, the children created their own drawings based on a made-up sentence, using their imaginations to show the meaning through their illustrations. They took these pictures (alongside the matching sentence) home today to show families.
A reminder that due to the Eid al-Adha holiday, there will be no school tomorrow or on Sunday or Monday next week. We look forward to seeing the children back in class on Tuesday, 10th June.
Wishing you a wonderful Eid and a lovely long weekend,
Kristina, Buthina and Rahma
