This week we have focused on building our model homes (photos posted last week) and writing up our method of building using sequence words. The teams are just about finished building their models and will be working on their writing to reflect on the building process and how they worked with their team members.

For maths his week, we have begun a new unit of study: numbers greater than 100. We are reviewing place value to two digits and have begun working on naming and using three digit numbers. Students should be able to fluently add and subtract to 20 so we are also practising that skill. Along with this unit, we continue to try different mental maths activities to build our number fluency and understanding.

In literacy this week, we learned about an important reading strategy: skip the work, then back up. When you come to a word you don’t know, skip over the word until you come to the end of the sentence or paragraph. Then good readers back up and read the sentence again. You can use the first letter or letters of the skipped word and their context clues to decode the unknown words.

For writing this week, we learned about postcards and how these are small pieces of writing to inform people of something we have done, usually during a holiday. Then we thought about something fun we had done recently and created our own postcards.

In our reading groups, we talked about the books we are reading, expanded our vocabulary by learning new words, practised applying our phonic knowledge and wrote sentences.

Next week, we will complete our current unit of inquiry and the students will present their model homes by explain their design, the special features and why these were added to their home. They will also explain how their home provides for the needs and wants of the family which might live in it.

In literacy, we will continue with phonics study, making sentences, guided reading and begin some new writing.

In maths, over the coming weeks we will be learning these objectives:

  • Students understand that a bundle of 10 tens represents 100.
  • Students begin to generalize bundling (in groups of 10) as the core of the place value system.
  • Students understand that a digit in the hundreds place represents that many groups of 100.
  • Students skip count by 5s, 10s, and 100s within 1000.
  • Students read and write numbers within 1000 as in standard form, as words, and in expanded form.
  • Students compare three-digit numbers using the symbols, >, =, or <.

Oman Week will be the 9th February to the 13th February. During this week we will be appreciating Omani culture through a variety of in school activities and with three field trips to visit historical or modern places around Sohar. It’s always a fun and exciting week! Grade 2 will be visiting Sohar Fort and the Old Souq on Sunday, 9th February, Majan Museum and Sangar Park on Tuesday, 11th February and the local fruit and vegetable market on Thursday, 13th February. As we are a grade group of 51 students we will need extra supervision, if you are able to volunteer to support at one of our field trips please let me know.
