Last week we did a Nature walk to start the process of tuning in to the new Unit under the theme of ‘How the World Works’.
This week we looked at the central idea which had a lot of big words and we tried to pick out ‘key’ words. The first word we thought was a key word and talked about was ‘Earth’.
Students gave a few ideas in a class group then each student was encouraged to draw the Earth and show what they know. about it The teacher writes as they speak and then I have an idea of prior knowledge including ideas, vocabulary and their conceptual understanding from the start.
We can build on this and each students can contribute to the learning of the class so it is a collaborative process.
The most important part of being an inquirer is showing curiosity and wanting to find out more. Although we always say there are no ‘wrong’ questions, we need to decide what we want to find out and ask the questions to get that information. Learning to ask questions is our next focus.
The initial understandings are always a fascinating source of information about our students and will be something we can look back at when we reach the end of the Unit so, hopefully, students will see for themselves how much they learnt!
Happy and healthy weekend everyone!
