This week in maths, we practised skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s. With a partner, students created a cityscape using pattern blocks to fit on a small whiteboard and talked about the names of the 2D shapes that were used. They wrote how many of each shape they used to build their city and counted the vertices/corners. Students placed shapes on a clothesline according from least to most amount of sides. They named as many shapes as they could and described number of sides. They had to  justify the order of shapes. When practising skip counting by 5s and 10s the students were asked what do you notice about the patterns on the 100 square? We did a school walk about to find 2D shapes and are working on labelling the name, sides, vertices and whether the lines are straight or curved.

Literacy this week: Students worked on and finished a BIO poem about themselves. We read poems and identified rhyme and rhythm. We found out that poems are meant to be read aloud or recited, then students chose a poem to recite and how to recite it: independently, paired or small group. We have uploaded some videos of the poetry recital. We continued with our making words for phonic and spelling, as well as using Nessy to support this learning. Our guided reading groups were introduced to new books, some fiction and some non-fiction where we are finding out the author’s purpose and continuing to build our reading strategies and skills. We have been working on our reading strategy of choosing ‘just right’ books which are books where we can read most of the word and understand most of what we are reading.

For our UOI, we reread ‘Alma’ and reminded ourselves of our previous UOI: Who we are, where we found out that in our identity is linked to our names. In small groups, we shared the story of our names which was so interesting to hear about. Back to our current unit, we worked on well-being traits in small groups where we collaborated to answer questions about: respect, responsibility, inclusion, health and being active.

Next week is a very short week so we will be combining our literacy and UOI to work on the summative assessment for this current unit. For maths, we will continue learning about 2D shapes and begin moving to 3D shapes. Please see below further information about maths at home.

Please return your ABIS school contract and the IT responsibility document by Sunday, 17th November.

Enjoy your weekend and I wish you a happy celebration of Oman National Day.
