We are half way through the Unit of Inquiry, How We Organize Ourselves. The students have been so busy looking at our Central Idea, community spaces can have positive effects on the well-being of its community members. We have defined well-being as the state of being comfortable, healthy, and happy. The students created a Word Web in groups, sharing what they felt well-being was. We have studied prepositions to help us describe the spaces we occupy. Today the students created a bird’s eye view of our classroom. When we come back from our holiday break we will continue looking at how spaces can support the well-being of individuals and communities. We will ask the question, how do communities interact with natural spaces in cities? And we will share what we believe our responsibility is in creating community spaces by having groups create their own community space.

In English we are looking at poetry. Almost all students have completed their rough draft of the Acrostic Poems. We will complete our final draft very soon and will share those with everyone on SeeSaw. The class will then work on Haikus, using nature as our muse. I can’t wait to see what the students come up with. The last poem we will be working on is a Limerick. Limerick’s are funny rhyming poems. For our grammar lessons we are focusing on action verbs.

During math we have been working on place value and base ten. Students should know the existence of ones, tens, and hundreds. With this knowledge we will be adding numbers to 100. In math we will also be looking at maps using coordinates, so we can create a real world relationship to the Unit of Inquiry.

We have completed our first assembly of the year. I believe it was a success and I would like to thank all the parents who joined us.
