This week we have finished up our current unit of inquiry: Who we are, we had a long discussion about how we can know about other cultures through a say and do lense. Students looked at photographs and were able to describe how clothing, language, religion, homes or food can show us different cultures. The students also finished up their reflection on their Shoebox Autobiographies. You should able to see your child’s shoebox and reflection on Seesaw.
In literacy, we have been working with the fable, ‘The Ant and the Grasshopper’. We have retold the story using words from the fable, drawn our own animals in a race and matched up opposite words to enhance our vocabulary. In small groups, students have met to work on specific fables in guided reading sessions and practised phonics and spelling using Nessy. Some whole class sessions have focused on making words using specific letter patterns, then identifying the words which rhyme.
All students have now had their reading assessed and assigned a level on RAZKids. Your child should have brought home books with them to share with you over the next few days. Please support your child in reading these books and discussing the storyline with you. The books should be brought back to school on a regular basis so your child can change the books and continue to build their reading skills.
In maths, we reviewed the definition of data handling asking: why do we collect data/information? We continued filling out the number of letters in our names, first creating a tally sheet, then compared the lengths of our names and created a bar chart. Finally, we made a class bar chart of the languages spoken in our class and generated questions from the chart to ask.
Our upcoming unit of inquiry: How we organise ourselves will focus on how community spaces can have positive effects on the well-being of its community members. Further information regarding this unit will be forthcoming.
We will be finishing up fables soon and begin looking at poetry. We will start by describing colours, our feelings and ourselves using a variety of poetic forms, moving on to creating poems using our senses. Through the UOI, we will be using non-fiction to research how community spaces support our well-being.
Further literacy activities will cover phonics, spelling, English language development, reading and writing skills.
Our upcoming maths will concentrate on addition within 100. The big idea here is:
