This week we have continued our work in adding and subtraction within 100 using mental and written strategies. Towards the end of the week we tried our hand at a fun doodle activity where the students needed to use a strategy or strategies to solve two-digit or three-digit addition equations. We reviewed the parts of an addition sentence so we continue practising using the correct maths vocabulary.
Most students have now moved on to publishing their ‘Day at the Beach’ story and are beginning to upload these on Seesaw. We have worked very hard on these over a number weeks (partially due to all the end-of-year assessments) following the writing procedure process: brainstorm ideas, write a first draft, self-assessment against a set criteria, read out loud to ourselves, read to a friend, editing for punctuation, spelling and grammar, then finally publishing our writing. This is a challenging task where there has been lots of learning about the writing process and identifying the expectations as writers in second grade. Next week, we hope to have more author’s sharing their work with the whole class and with you on Seesaw.
The students had fun choosing and performing another Reader’s Theatre at the beginning of the week. They thought about their initial performances and how they might improve these through the addition of a character’s voice and gestures. It was a lot of fun!
Please see below some suggested reading for your children which they might choose to read over the summer.
