Year-to-Date: 1,701; November 2023: 13.2; Last Week: 18.9
All apologies for my absence and the lack of much more than a basic summary from the week; I’ve been battling a virus in my sinuses that feels like I’ve finally won. (Ugh! Being sick is exhausting!!) Big thanks to each and every family who participated in 3-way or parent-teacher-student conferences. During these conferences, students were able to present what their learning goals are as well as how they will work towards meeting these and how we may work together to support children’s learning. And it has been so sweet to observe our students and your child(ren) share their learning. Take some time to catch up and please use the following link to find photographs from this week: G6 W11 in Pictures.
Home Learning – aka Homework
Thank you for your continued support with home learning 🙂 As a minimum, homework should consist of reading and mathematics over about an hour per day. Students are provided with a task sheet in their homework journal as a starting point with ways to personalize learning included in the daily check-in. When circumstances necessitate please write a note with a signature about what’s happening when this work cannot be completed. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns about home learning please do not hesitate to contact us about this.
Literacy Summary
This week, students continued to work in social issues book clubs. At this point in the sequential development of reading and writing skills, students are working to complete frameworks such as ‘Character in Book Title by Author is likeable/ unlikeable because…because…because…’ or ‘Character has the most power in Book Title by Author because …, because …, and because…’ with evidence for their statements. Over the next week, students will expand on their character analysis in the form of a literary essay outlining and making connections with social issues from within their chosen books. Making a claim, backing it up with reasons, and substantiating it with evidence is a foundational life skill.
Numeracy Summary
This week, students recapped and progressed through ratios and unit rates to fractions. They are now beginning to work on solving problems involving decimal division. Photos of the kinds of problems and some examples working out are included in this week’s pictures. Please feel free to browse these, try a couple yourself, and maybe work a couple out with your child(ren). Your involvement in this would be valuable as we work through these real life problem solving situations because this will add importance, relevance, and context to developing these skills.
UoI Summary
This week, students focussed on developing an understanding of some of the social issues that exist in the sphere of internet use as well as looking at defining and exploring rights and responsibilities around the use of internet capable devices or digital citizenship.
