This week has been as busy as ever!

We have almost finished all of our baseline assessments for the beginning of the school year and all of the students have been placed on a level on the RAZ Kids reading site. This morning we practised logging in to the site and read a book or two to refresh our memories of how RAZ Kids works or to learn how to use the site. Today, look for a letter with further information on how to use this reading site, as well as, your child’s log-in card. Please keep the log-in information in a safe place so your child can easily access RAZ Kids and read for 20 minutes everyday. I spoke with the children about reading versus listening and would ask that support your child in achieving a balance between these two ways to access a book.

Next week, I hope to begin sending small books home for the students to share with their families. This are copies from the RAZ Kids site so are not as sturdy as books borrowed from the library. These will come home in a folder also to keep in a safe place at home.

Our big writing for this week was the writing assessment; we began by studying an image from a book, then generating ideas using a visible thinking routine: See, Think, Wonder. After that, the students thought of vocabulary they might need and then worked on their writing for about 45 minutes. This will provide valuable information on how we can best support each student in their writing skills and use.

Our maths this week focused on taking tallies of the languages we speak, then used this information to create bar graphs. We also practised ordering numbers from greatest to least and vice versa. We will continue working with patterns and number sense.

For our UOI we have been identifying our own characteristics and talking about how cultures are created by what we say and do. We really look forward to seeing all the Shoebox Autobiographies on the 14th September.

Wishing you a lovely weekend!
