I’m looking back at a wonderful first week of school with my new Grade 1 students. Some of them were a bit nervous at the start of the week, which is completely understandable. It was great to see how they gradual relaxed during the week and their willingness to engage with both myself, Ms. Ami, and their fellow classmates.
This first week we took the time to get to know each other and to find our place in the new learning environment. We learned that our names have letters and that letters make a sound. Furthermore we built our names and counted the letters. The next step was putting all our names in a name graph. This way we discovered who has a long and who has a short name. Naturally, we allocated time for delving into our Math and Reading stations.
