Homework
This week for homework, we continued with our basic facts, reading, codebreaking and geography quiz as well as our spelling work.
Reading, Writing and Inquiry (G6 Exhibition groups Paste below)
This week, we began our new unit on ‘Climate change’ by watching selected timelapse videos on Google Earth that show the impacts of global warming and decreasing rainfall. The students did a ‘Then.. Now’ flow diagram explaining climate change in these videos. They learnt the difference between weather and climate by looking at anchor charts and watching videos. As a whole class activity, students unpacked the central idea ‘Human actions impact climate change’ on a jamboard.
Please see below a sample of students initial thinking about climate change;
Students completed a survey on ‘migration’ by filling out a Google Form in which they expressed their understanding of push & pull factors, migration patterns and the impacts of migration.
Students also completed compiling Google Slides together with the biography of a famous immigrant they had chosen.
How you can help at home:
If you are able to discuss this with your children at home sharing stories about how climate is changing or watch news or documentaries about climate change together (such as David Attenborough’s Blue Planet, Climate Change – Britain Under Threat, The Future of our Frozen World or Zac Efron’s Down to Earth). These conversations would help students develop curiosity and make connections with the real world issues.
Maths:
Students continued to complete maths maintenance based on addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. They also learnt to identify and mark coordinates on a grid. Students completed a timed basic facts assessment. It was great to see the progress they have made. We look forward to sharing the results of this during Student Led Conferences (SLC’s) coming up in March. Please see below for a picture of some of our math maintenance questions from this week. Feel free to discuss these with your children.
How you can help at home:
Please help your children to use the Nessy, RAZ kids, Epic and Prodigy accounts for numeracy and literacy practice as part of their homework. As always, spending time with your children at home reading, writing and playing math games is a very valuable shared learning time.
Worth repeating:
Thank you.
Please enjoy the week ahead. We look forward to seeing everyone back at school on Sunday the 5th of March.
As always, if you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us.
Sincere regards,
Your partners in learning.
