Dear Grade 6 Parents and Students,

Another busy week with lots going on.  Welcome to our review of week 21.

This week we were part of a number of special educational events as part of our school Oman Week recognition.

Students learnt about Oman’s rich maritime history and made boats, participated in drumming lessons, worked with clay in a pottery lesson, learned about traditional Omani games, shared stories together, celebrated a 1st Birthday in traditional Omani style, rode Camels and were part of a special assembly sharing traditional Omani costumes and dance. As well as this, students also worked hard on their unit of inquiry and completed a cyclic review of math basic facts.

Please see below and in the link for some photos from this week:

Homework

This week for homework, we continued with our basic facts, reading, codebreaking and geography quiz as well as our spelling work.

Reading, Writing and Inquiry

This week, we worked hard to uncover more information about migration and analysed the cause and effect of migration associated with ‘Brain Drain’ . Students will now have until Monday of next week to complete an open book survey on this subject by completing an online form about their learning.

Again the central idea for this unit is:

Human migration is a response to challenges, risks and opportunities.

For this unit students have been inquiring into:

  • Reasons why people migrate
  • Migration patterns
  • The effects of migration on communities and individuals

If you are able to discuss this with your children at home as we work together to support their learning that would be great. I am sure you will have stories that you can share and that they will love spending time with you sharing these stories.

Please see right for some pictures of our UOI learning this week.

Mathematics

Students continued to complete maths maintenance in preparation for their Basic facts assessment today. We look forward to sharing results during our Student Led Conferences (SLC’s) coming up in March. They also learnt to represent a data set on a line graph.  Please see below for a picture of some of our math maintenance questions from this week. Feel free to discuss these with your children.

How you can help at home:

Please help your children to use the Nessy, RAZ kids, Epic and Prodigy accounts for numeracy and literacy practice as part of their homework. As always, spending time with your children at home reading, writing and playing math games is a very valuable shared learning time.

Worth repeating:

Thank you.

As always, if you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us

Sincere regards,

Your partners in learning.
