Dear Parents and Students,
Firstly, wish you all a wonderful 52nd Omani National Day. What a fabulous week it was! With the Oman National day celebration today, we concluded this week with sweets, savouries, dance and music performance by the students. Hearty thanks to all of you for your contribution to the festivity. Being the second week after October holidays, this was also a full week of getting right back into the swing of things. 3 way conferences this week were well attended and very insightful. It was great to see you taking such an interest in your children’s education. Our students/ your children loved sharing this special time with you.
Please see below for notices and highlights.
Reading and writing: This week, students started working in 4 different reading groups. In each group, we looked at varied strategies starting from making predictions about the genre based on the book cover, making inferences from the photos and illustrations (picture walk), and discussing how the text is organised (chapters or subheadings or just paragraphs). This will help us do a reading comprehension next week. Students developed their note-taking skills by learning how to identify important details from a given text and writing these down using bullet points or subheadings. For this, each student chose a part from the article ‘52 wonders of Oman.’ For your interest, click this link to see this article. We did this as a tribute to Oman on its 52nd National Day.
Mathematics: This week in Maths, students made progress in their basic facts by continuing with math maintenance everyday. As a part of recalling our prior knowledge, we discussed the meaning of division and solved some basic division problems by using strategies such as fact family, groups/models, repeated subtraction or by using distributive property of division (we will be using this terminology later in our reasoning and explanation tasks). We explored long division and started looking at handling remainders and writing the quotient as a decimal in case there’s a remainder. We took a slight dip into the ‘bus stop strategy’ that helps us save space and improve our mental calculation ability.
Integrated UOI: This week we have focused on completing our definition of flight. Our class definition of flying has now been written and is as follows: Flying is moving through the air or space without touching a planetary surface. We have also looked at how to write a scientific report, fair testing and variables. For this students were able to make and test their own planes.
Homework: Thank you for your continued support with home learning. As a minimum, homework should consist of reading and mathematics and take no more than one hour per day. Students are provided with a home learning task sheet to complete every week however if they are unable to complete this please write a note regarding this on their homework books and continue to sign this as a record that you have sighted their books. If you have any questions about home learning please do not hesitate to contact us about this.
Thank you.
