Dear Parents and Students,

A short week but a busy one culminating in our first sharing assembly this year. It was great to see so many of you there. Because we did not have a broadcaster last week, please see below for links to review Grade 6 in pictures for last week and this week just gone.

Homework: Thank you for your continued support and helping students to be accountable to their home learning tasks by sighting and signing their homework each week.

Self-Management Skills & Essential Agreement: In Grade 6, we are focusing on developing self-management skills through our first unit. Rather than enforcing imposed consequences, we are providing opportunities for students to reflect on their behaviour and plan to make changes. Students completed a self-reflection on Tuesday to see how consistent they have been in following our essential agreements. The results were very interesting. It seems that while some students have honestly reflected on their behaviour in their responses, other students may have simply reflected on what they should be doing instead. We hope to see students reflecting deeply in the days to come so we can sustain the practice of providing students with ownership of their learning.

Reading and writing: Last week students completed a diagnostic spelling test. We will have spelling lessons and students will work in groups based on the data we have recorded from this test. This week we have continued to engage with texts to find the main idea and supporting details. We applied this in writing by researching details related to the main idea chosen from a range of options.

Listening: The students engaged in active listening of an information text about bulldogs. They learnt to use sketchnoting techniques to note down the facts and raised their hands to ask questions when they came across new words or concepts.

Mathematics: This week in Math, students have continued to work on developing their basic facts as well as extending their ability to work with real life math problems. For example, 32x 5 OMR budget allocation for dinner for our overnight stay at school next week. How will we do this, what will we order, quantities, deals, cost, change, preferences, groupings, timings and so on. This is a rich authentic learning experience grounded in context. Students will continue to work on ‘Camp’ logistics next week as well.

Integrated UOI: This week we have brought a number of big fans into class as provocations and inquiry pieces to help us tune into our next ‘science heavy’ unit based around ‘Flight’. During this unit students will inquire into:

  • The relationship between the physics involved in flight and animals
  • Developing and designing flying objects

This will be a hands-on type unit where students get to design, make and test flying objects looking at the principles of scientific fair testing, controlling independent variables, making and testing hypotheses and so on. This is an exciting unit to be engaged in so please do talk with your children about this and remember to please ask if you have any questions in relation to this.

Worth Repeating: Remember our overnight camp is this week on Wednesday 🙂

Next  week is again a short week since Sunday is a holiday. Happy Prophet Mohammed Day to all those who’ll be celebrating.

Children should remember their… Hat, Water bottle, charged Ipad, PE/ swimming Kit…

Thank you for your continued support in keeping us all safe, happy and learning together. As always, if you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincere regards,

Your partners in learning.
