A focus for our DP classes this year in English and TOK classes has been on developing authentic, respectful conversations. One technique that we have been utilizing to this end are spiderweb conversations. Students are presented with an open-ended question which they need to discuss, debate and explore.
While the students explore this topic, the teacher (me, in this case) follows the conversation – monitoring who is speaking, who is responding and tracking the contributions each is making. This tool has been useful for our classes in recognizing when we are interrupting others, who needs to be encouraged to contribute and who is dominating conversations. In a few weeks, collaboration has improved and students are becoming more conscientious when speaking with each other. A winning situation for everyone.
