This week, we focused on the natural resource of water. The students looked at how we use water in everyday life and also ways that we can save and conserve it.

We listened to a story called ‘The Water Princess’. Many of the students were visibly moved by the story of Gie Gie who had to walk for miles every day to collect water that wasn’t even clean. It provoked discussions about what that would feel like, why she didn’t have access to clean water and if there is anything we can we do about it.

We have also been learning about fractions and finding a fraction of an amount. The students are realizing how important their other maths knowledge and skills are, especially multiplication and division.

Our current unit of work will eventually link to persuasive writing. The students practised this type of writing by trying to convince me that they deserved an early finish. They included great arguments, with evidence and clever persuasive devices.
