This week in History class, grade 7 began reading Crispin. This novel of historical fiction by the renowned teen author Avi is about a boy living in medieval times in England. It is an outstanding portrait of life in the Middle Ages, told from the point of view of a peasant, rather than the usual knight or monarch of Hollywood treatment.
As we read this novel together, students will examining feudalism (structure of society), the role of religion, and, ultimately, human rights during this crucial period.
I invite you to converse with your child about the book. What are they learning from the story? What does Crispin tell us about the Middle Ages?
