Grade 8s have been practicing a style of taking notes called “sketchnoting”, which means using a combination of text and images to record concepts and ideas. This method requires students to interact with the information much more deeply, as they make choices about symbols, images, organization, and text, and also record the information in a form that uses visuals, appealing to a student’s natural love of pictures. It even invites humor, as cartoon speech bubbles can be used to get across different perspectives. Grade 8s have learned quite a bit from trying this technique, and have learned that you don’t have to be a good artist to create a good sketchnote.
