To celebrate Earth Day secondary students are taking more steps forward on the war on PLASTIC. After a presentation about the unprecedented negative effects of plastic on the Marine life, birds, the environment and ultimately the top of the food chain, us humans, students took Action!
See the photos below of secondary students sorting, crushing, and bagging mixed plastics collected from students, families and school events at ABIS. Regarding the sorting of plastics, see the important new information below.
In Oman, we currently can only recycle #2 HDPE. This includes High Density Polyethylene, like common white and colored plastic milk containers, shampoo bottles and laundry detergent bottles.
And #5 PP Polypropylene, hard but flexible plastic like Yogurt containers, Ice Cream containers, and microwave wear (see photos below).
This means that #1 PET clear plastic water bottles, yes, the ones most commonly used, are NOT RECYCLABLE! With this new information, even more than ever we are encouraging REDUCING the usage of these and all types of plastic and paper.
ABIS is now open to families bringing in their recyclable plastics (as described above i.e. no plastic water bottles) and all paper products to our recycle bins at the front of the school near the parking lot area. Thank you for supporting ABIS’s efforts to Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle!
“The waste that’s associated with the beverage industry comprises of a third to a half of the marine debris we find globally.” ~ Anja Taylor (CSIRO research team)
