Why do some students remember more facts and concepts than others and do better on exams? Because they have higher IQ? Because they are more committed to school work and invest more time for revision? Because their parents make sure they study hard? These examples may all give some clues, but they are not necessary universal truths…

As a fact, some students with normal IQ can consistently demonstrate very high scores on knowledge-centered tests. Recent brain research has shown that some strategies to train the memory are more effective than others. These fortunate students have figured out how to maximize their success with minimal effort without the need for parents to nag about “Have you done your homework?” or “Have you done your revision?”

These techniques are fun and easy to learn. At ABIS we incorporate learning strategies into our pastoral programme and help students become more aware of study and memory enhancement techniques. Even the smartest brain can be trained to remember better and we try to have fun while we are doing it.

Here is an image of Mr. Thompson combining forces with me to teach grade 9 students powerful memory techniques that will help them remember the essential facts and concepts of the IGCSE Biology Syllabus. The end of year exam for grade 9 is an excellent opportunity for the students to demonstrate their knowledge as well as preparing them for next year. Please feel free to ask students what they have learned about how memory works and how the brain is able to formulate memory – if they remember that is!
