Welcome to the end of another wonderful week of learning! Here is a recap of what we explored in class, including our math concepts, phonics sounds, and unit assessments, as well as how you can support your child at home.
What We Learned This Week
Math
- Tens & Ones Blocks: We used tens blocks and ones blocks to build 2-digit numbers and practice counting accurately.
- Venn Diagrams: Students practiced sorting objects into overlapping circles to identify similarities and differences.
- Math Assessments: We completed our end-of-unit math assessments to showcase everything students have learned!
Phonics & Literacy
- Target Sounds: We introduced the letter sounds /g/ (as in gorilla) and /o/ (as in octopus). Students practiced identifying these sounds at the beginning of words and blending them into simple vocabulary.
Unit of Inquiry (UOI): Who We Are Our Unit of Inquiry focused on learning how to notice, ask, listen, and repair when handling everyday challenges and problem-solving together. Through interactive scenarios, students learned to observe their environment, offer help, listen to others’ needs, and repair small accidents or mistakes.
- UOI Assessment: We completed our UOI assessment based on everything we learned throughout our “Who We Are” unit!
How You Can Practice at Home Here are a few simple ways you can support your child’s learning over the break:
- Tens and Ones Practice: Use small household items (like pasta pieces or pretzels) to make “groups of 10” and single “ones.” Ask your child to build numbers like 14, 23, or 35.
- Sorting with Venn Diagrams: Draw two overlapping circles on paper. Practice sorting toys or household items (e.g., hard vs. soft, or plastic vs. wooden, with items that fit both in the middle).
- Notice, Ask, Listen, and Repair: Practice these social-emotional steps at home during daily activities or accidental spills:
- Notice: “I notice the water tipped over!”
- Ask: “Would you like help wiping this up?”
- Listen: Check if the answer is “yes” or “no” and respect their response.
- Repair: Work together to dry the area or fix the issue.
