Dear Secondary Families,

This week, we were delighted to receive the MYP eAssessment Certificates for our current Grade 11 students. We brought the students together for a short presentation, followed by food and snacks, to recognise their achievement and congratulate them on the work they put into their final year of the MYP.

Our current Grade 10 students have already had an opportunity to experience the eAssessment format and have begun preparing for their own assessments later this academic year. This includes working in the online format and identifying the focus of their Personal Project. Starting early gives them time to become familiar with the types of questions, practise applying their learning and build confidence.

The MYP eAssessment takes place in the final year of the programme and provides students with an opportunity to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and understanding they have developed throughout the MYP. It includes on-screen examinations, coursework portfolios in selected subjects, and the Personal Project.

Rather than focusing simply on recalling facts, the assessments ask students to analyse information, make connections between ideas, solve problems and apply their learning in unfamiliar situations. The on-screen examinations use a range of question types and stimulus materials, while coursework and the Personal Project allow students to demonstrate their learning through more sustained, independent work. Together, these different forms of assessment provide a broad picture of each student’s achievement at the end of the MYP.

Grade 11 Chemistry visit to Vale

Grade 11 students took their learning beyond the classroom with a visit to Vale as part of their Chemistry studies. During a tour of the plant, they learned about the production, importation and exportation of iron ore pellets and saw how scientific knowledge is applied within a large industrial operation.

The visit offered much more than a chance to see the technology and scale of the plant. Students heard how safety, risk awareness and responsible decision-making shape the work carried out each day. They also learned about Vale’s emphasis on ethics, sustainability and its responsibilities to people and the wider community. Discussions about careers, accountability, ownership, discipline and active listening helped students connect their studies with the skills and values they will need beyond school.

Opportunities like this are an essential part of learning at ABIS. They help students see the relevance of what they study and understand how classroom knowledge can be used to address real challenges. We are grateful to the Vale team for welcoming our students and teachers, sharing their expertise and hosting the visit with such care and professionalism. We look forward to continuing this valuable connection.

Congratulations again to our Grade 11 students on their MYP achievements, and thank you to everyone supporting our Grade 10 students as they prepare for the year ahead.

Have a lovely weekend!
