This week started with a BUZZ! On Sunday, students took part in the first big provocation for our new unit of inquiry, Where We Are in Place and Time, which focuses on human migration.

Students were presented with a fictional scenario in which a bee infestation meant they had to evacuate their classrooms. They attempted to relocate to other classrooms, where they experienced different responses: some groups were refused entry, some were accepted reluctantly, and others were welcomed willingly. We then brought everyone back together, revealed that it had been a simulation, and encouraged students to wonder why we had created this experience. Since then, we have been tuning in to the history of migration and exploring the different reasons people migrate. Check Seesaw to read your child’s reflection on the experience.

We would also love to invite parents or family members to share a personal migration journey with our students. If you are interested, please let us know so we can arrange a suitable time.

In Maths, students have begun representing numbers in different ways, including standard form, word form, expanded form, place-value models, number lines and real-life contexts. We will continue building and applying these skills throughout our number-sense unit.

In Literacy, we have been focusing on the different components of a strong sentence. Students have been learning more about punctuation, identifying errors and applying punctuation correctly in their writing. Editing and revising will remain an important focus as students develop their writing skills throughout the year.
