Dear Parents,

It has been a lovely and productive week in Grade 1. The children have worked hard and enthusiastically practised and developed a range of new skills.

In Maths, we have been practising counting to 40 and counting backwards from 20 to 0. We have also started counting in 2s. The children discovered that when counting in 2s, we skip one number each time, for example, 0, 2, 4, 6 or 1, 3, 5, 7. We are also regularly practising number formation. Developing correct number formation is important for helping children write and recognise numbers clearly and accurately.

The children practise their handwriting daily by tracing the letters they have already learned and then writing them independently. This supports the development of fine motor skills, correct letter formation and confidence in their writing.

As part of our “Who We Are” unit, we are exploring identity and diversity. The children added their photo to the country they come from on our world map. This gave us an opportunity to celebrate our different backgrounds and learn more about each other, our cultures, languages and countries.

Our family photos have also found a special place in our classroom. The photos provide a wonderful opportunity for conversations about our families and who we are. The children enjoy sharing information about their families while learning more about their classmates. In this way, we are getting to know each other better and making a meaningful connection to our “Who We Are” unit.

Warm regards,
Ms. Guinee
