This week Grade 2 students have attended several rehearsals to practise for today’s concert. They have been working hard with Mr Mino to remember the words to the songs and how to sing them.
It has also been Spirit Week and the students have been participating enthusiastically! Thank you parents for helping your child organise themself to participate in this week long event. It has been so fun to see the students come to school in their different outfits and to listen to their ideas about themselves.
For maths this week, we have been exploring symmetry and tessellations. We have found symmetry and tessellations in our environment, sometimes nature made and sometimes human made. Please have a look at your child’s work on Seesaw. We are still working on our understanding of lines of symmetry – you can help your child by spotting lines of symmetry on shapes in your home or in nature. During mental maths session we have been reviewing place value and reminding ourselves how to use place value charts, base 10 resources and write numbers using the expanded form.
In literacy this week, we have worked on building our use of letter patterns to spell words. We completed a shared writing using procedural writing criteria on how to be a good friend. Some or our writing has been related to our UOI where we wrote about what we think we know about light and what we want to know about light. We generated a list of vocabulary words we can use in our unit and refer to them when we are writing. We’ve had a bit of time to read independently or practise phonics and spelling using Nessy.
During our UOI, we have discussed different sources of light and whether it is natural or human made; in pairs, students created a poster classifying light sources. We looked into a box to view items and see which items created light and discovered that aluminium and glitter reflect light and are not a light source. We have begun learning about how light travels and are gaining understanding that it travels in a straight line.
